What Are the Different Types of Elevators That Exist Today?

Posted on by roberto

Believe it or not, elevators have existed in one form or another for thousands of years. Of course, it hasn’t been that long that elevators utilized new forms of power to lift people.

If you aren’t around elevators all that often, you might think that they all pretty much work and operate the same. However, that’s simply not the case in reality.

There are several different types of elevators that exist today. By knowing how they differ, you can figure out which is the best elevator for your needs. So keep on reading and we will take you through everything you will want to know about elevators!

Geared and Gearless Traction Elevator

A lot of commercial elevators are either geared or gearless traction devices. A traction elevator has ropes that pass over a wheel attached to a motor. The ropes lower and lift the elevator car.

A geared traction elevator uses a motor that is connected to a gearbox.

There are also gearless traction elevators. These elevators don’t have a gear that is used to regulate speed. This means that you can move as fast as two thousand feet per minute.

Hydraulic Elevator

A hydraulic elevator is supported at the bottom by a piston. The piston pushes the elevator car up while a motor pushes hydraulic fluid through the piston.

The valve then releases the hydraulic liquid from the piston. You are most likely going to find this kind of elevator used in buildings that have between two and eight stories.

Vacuum (Air Driven) Home Elevator

This kind of residential elevator is the newest type of machine to hit the elevator market. Vacuum elevators don’t use any pulley systems or cables to move. Instead, they simply utilize the laws of physics.

When you tell the elevator to go up, the system will lower the pressure above the tube and push air pressure upwards.

You can find elevators that are big enough for one to three people. They are also very popular among families that have people with wheelchairs.

Machine-Room-Less (MRL) Elevator

A lot of elevators are designed with a machine room that is located above the elevator shaft. However, this kind of elevator has a machine that is located in the override space. These elevators are becoming more popular in mid-rise buildings because they save power and don’t need as much space.

No matter what kind of elevator you have, it’s important that you use a reputable maintenance service, like Auditmate, the keep your machines running properly.
