Maybe you were given it by a deceased relative? Perhaps you purchased it with big plans in mind, only for roadblocks to obstruct you? In any case, you have vacant land on your hands.
Now, you could just keep it and potentially do something with it in the future. But that may never happen. As such, the better idea might be to sell it.
Why should you sell your land? Here are 3 reasons.
1. The Land Isn’t Doing You Any Good
Simply put, if your plot of land isn’t doing you any good, if it isn’t serving any benefit, you should sell it. Why? Because there are responsibilities to tend to when you own land, and if you’re not getting any benefit from the land, these responsibilities are dragging you down for no reason.
So, if you have no plans for how you’re going to use the land, and if the land doesn’t stand to be worth money down the road, just sell it. Odds are, once it’s gone, you’ll be happy to have gotten it off your hands.
2. You’re at Risk of Violating Code
As was noted above, when you own a piece of land, you have responsibilities to tend to, even if the land isn’t being used for anything. In short, you have to make sure that the land isn’t violating the local legal code.
What kind of legal code might vacant land be violating? Well, it could be unkempt, sporting tall grass that’s higher than what’s legally allowed in the area.
It could also be subject to the use of strangers, some of whom might be dumping toxic waste. You would be responsible for this, even if you’re not the one dumping it.
You don’t want to have to pay fines for land that you don’t even use. So, instead of risking code violations, just sell the land to someone else.
3. You’ll Get a Decent Chunk of Money in Return
Regardless of the amount of land you own, and regardless of where it’s located, selling it is bound to provide you with a decent monetary return. In all likelihood, it will net you at least a few thousand dollars.
That’s a few thousand dollars to do whatever you want with. You could purchase a new car, put it in your retirement account, or even go on a nice vacation.
The alternative is to hold onto the land and hope its value increases over time. But unless it’s in a highly desirable area, its value likely won’t increase much at all.
